NYPA, NYNPA, NYNAME and FCPNY to co-present 2017 Spring Convention

August 5, 2016

The New York Press Association (NYPA), New York News Publishers Association (NYNPA), New York Newspapers Advertising and Marketing Executives (NYNAME), and the Free Community Papers of New York (FCPNY) are pleased to announce a new partnership that will see the four organizations co-present the 2017 Spring Convention and Trade Show in April.

The New York State Circulation Management Association, Inc. (NYSCMA, Inc.), which had collaborated with NYNAME and NYNPA on an annual conference since 2008, will instead partner with the Inter-State Circulation Management Association (I-SCMA) to co-present their conference in Pittsburgh, PA in September, 2017.

Scheduled for April 6-8, 2017 at the Gideon Putnam in Saratoga Springs, the Spring Convention aims to bring together the weekly, community and daily newspapers of New York State for a weekend of industry-leading speakers, manager and staff training, and valuable networking that is sure to improve staff productivity and benefit a paper’s bottom line, no matter its size.

With the addition of NYNPA and NYNAME as co-presenters, members of those organizations will now be permitted to attend the convention at standard NYPA member rates. Additionally, NYNPA and NYNAME members will be eligible to participate in the advertising and special section categories of NYPA’s Better Newspaper Contest, effectively replacing NYNAME’s annual advertising contest. NYNPA will continue to administer its own journalism and photography awards competion for its members each year, as usual.

Although NYNAME and NYSCMA, Inc. will no longer be collaborating on an annual conference, the two groups will continue working closely on other projects, including regular networking meet-ups and other training sessions across the state. The next meet-up will take place Thursday, September 15th in Syracuse (details will be announced shortly).

Advertising Contest

2016 Advertising Contest

The New York Newspapers Advertising & Marketing Executives (NYNAME) are now accepting entries for its 2016 advertising competition.

Open to members of NYNAME and NYNPA, the annual contest recognizes newspapers and their advertising staff for their hard work and talents in newspaper advertising.

As always, the contest is free to enter. The deadline to submit entries is Friday, February 26 at 5:00 p.m.

This year, NYNAME has revamped the competition by adding new categories and adjusting its circulation classes.

New categories for 2016 include Classified Section, General Ad – 2x3 and Smaller, General Ad – 2x4 and Larger, Public Service or Non-Profit Special Section, Classified Promotion, Locally Prepared Auto, Real Estate or Recruitment Ad, Mobile or Tablet Ad, and Conquest Targeted E-mail.

Some categories were held over from previous contests, including Newspaper Self-Promotion, Specialty Supplement, Innovative Ad Project, and two online categories, while several outdated categories were retired to make room for the new additions.

Also new for 2016, each newspaper will be permitted to submit up to three entries in the Innovative Ad Project category in order for NYNAME to collect more great ideas for its annual Innovative Ideas Book, which is distributed to attendees of the 2016 conference. Only one entry per category, per newspaper is allowed in all other categories of the competition.

In an effort to create a better balance among members competing in the contest, NYNAME has adjusted its circulation groups as follows:

  1. Under 10,000
  2. 10,000-25,000
  3. Over 25,000

Winners of the contest will be announced during the awards banquet at the Ninth Annual Sales & Marketing Joint Conference on Monday, June 13th at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs, New York.

To enter the competition, please download and review the Call for Entries 2016 Booklet (.pdf), then visit www.betterbnc.com/nyname2016 to submit entries.

Members with questions about the competition should contact Don Ferlazzo at (518) 449-1667 ext. 700 or dferlazzo@nynpa.com.

History

NYNAME can trace its roots back to 1922 when the Advertising Managers Bureau of the New York State Dailies was formed. This was one year after the founding of the New York State Publishers Association. For sixty-three years, the New York State Dailies Advertising Managers Bureau as it was known, held yearly meetings, training sessions, and an annual conference. Like all organizations that evolve and grow, so too did the Advertising Managers Bureau. On June 6, 1985, at the annual Spring Conference, the membership voted to change the name to the New York Newspaper Advertising and Marketing Executives Association. On October 8, 1985, NYNAME became an official incorporated not for profit in the state of New York.
